what are hormones
special chemical produced by glands within the body. they act as messengers, carrying different orders to their targeted tissue via the bloodstream.
what is the function of the endocrine system
to coordinate a variety of bodily functions using hormones. it helps the body maintain homeostasis.
how are hormones transported around the body
a hormone is released into the bloodstream by a gland, the hormone will travel to its target cell and bind to a receptor cell to trigger a response.
what are the 10 main glands in the body
- hypothalamus
- pituitary
- pineal
- thyroid
- parathyroids
- thymus
- pancreas
- adrenal glands
- ovaries
- testes
what is the function of the hypothalamus
it is the control centre of the endocrine system. it controls the release of hormones to help maintain homeostasis within the body. the hypothalamus will send out “releasing hormones” such as human growth hormone releasing hormone which triggers the release of HGH from the pituitary gland.
what is the function of the thyroid.
the thyroids role is to regulate the metabolism, growth and development. the pituitary gland releases TSH, triggering thyroxine (T4) and T3 to be released into the body, these hormones regulate the metabolism which overall regulates the bodies temperature, development and energy levels.
what are the 6 parts of the brain
- frontal lobe
- temporal lobe
- parietal lobe
- optical lobe
- cerebellum
- brain stem
what does the frontal lobe coordinate
motor control
what does the parietal lobe coordinate
touch
body orientation
what does the optical lobe coordinate
sight
what does the cerebellum control
balance
what does the brian stem coordinate
involuntary responses
what does the temporal lobe coordinate
hearing
memory
