Endocrine Diseases Flashcards
Hypothyroidism
Thyroid hormones important to the skin, initiate anagen phase of hair follicle cycle.
Alopecia noted in areas of wear
Hair not growing back after clipping
Dull, dry brittle hair coat
Ridgebacks: pronounced striping
Recurrent pyoderma and otitis externa also common
Hyperadrenocorticism
Excess cortisol - disturbances in cornification, dermal thinning, delayed wound healing
Bilateral symmetrical alopecia, skin easily bruises, visible dermal blood vessels, comedones, caliconosis cutis, increased susceptibility to pyoderma, adult onset demodex
Calcinosis Cutis
General Term includes all dystrophic or metastatic calcification of the skin.
Generally secondary to hyperadrenocorticism or iatrogenic hyperglucocorticoidism.
Plaques and crusts to affected areas.
Has been reported in CRF
Generally resolves once underlying metabolic disturbance is removed.
Feline Aquired Skin Fragility
Often associated with hyperadrenocorticism (often adrenal tumors), iatrogenic hyperglucocorticoidism, progestational compounds
Fragile, thin skin that easily bruises and tears with simple manipulations
Hyperestrogenism
Increased estrogen from cystic ovaries, granulosa cell tumors, testicular tumors, iatrogenic estrogen supplementation, topical estrogen products.
Inhibits anagen initiation of hair follicles - alopecia
Can cause feminization of males
Tx - neuter, remove sources of estrogen
Feline Paraneoplastic Alopecia
Association with pancreatic adenocarcinoma
Bilateral symmetrical ventrally pronounced alopecia (not shiny)
Dry, Scaly or fissured footpads in some cats
Older cats
Secondary Malassezia common
AUS for diagnosis
Feline Thymoma associated Exfoliative Dermatitis
Rare
Middle - older cats with thymomas
Generalized erythema and marking scaling
Removal of thymine tumor will resolve Derm signs
Nodular Dermatofibrosis
Syndrome characterized by general nodular dermatofibrosis associated with renal cystadnocarcinomas and cystadenomas.
Most often in German Shepherds and their crosses.
Middle age dogs 6 -8 years
Renal dysfunction can develop 3 - 5 years after skin issues first noted
Paraneoplastic Pemphigus
Rare, severe blistering disease of mucosal surfaces, haired skin
Grave prognosis
