Endocrine Anatomy Flashcards
What does the hypothalamic-pituitary system do?
secretes pituitary hormones controlled by the hypothalamus
What does the anterior pituitary secrete?
TSH and ACTH
What is TSH?
Thyroid-stimulating hormone is a pituitary hormone that stimulates the thyroid gland to produce thyroxine, and then triiodothyronine
What is ACTH?
The function of ACTH is to regulate levels of the steroid hormone cortisol and catecholamines, which released from the adrenal gland.
What does the posterior pituitary secrete?
ADH and Oxytocin
What is ADH?
Antidiuretic Hormone that causes fluid retention in the body that is released in response to high serum osmolality and Hypotension
What is Oxytocin?
a natural hormone that manages key aspects of the female and male reproductive systems, including labor and delivery and lactation, as well as aspects of human behavior
What are the adrenal glands?
glands that sit on the top of the kidneys with an inner medulla and outer cortex.
What does the adrenal medulla do?
secretes epinephrine and norepinephrine in response to ACTH release, Glucocorticoids, mineralocorticoids, and androgens
What is the key Glucocorticoid?
Cortisol
What is the key mineralocorticoid?
Aldosterone
What are the sex steroids called?
androgens
What does SNS stimulation cause?
catecholamines are released which causes a fight or flight response
What do the steroid hormones do?
they regulate the body’s stress response and are known as the big 3
What are the big three steroid hormones?
Sugar, Salt, and Sex
