What viral pathogens can cause encephalitis?
HSV-1, CMV, EBV
What non-viral pathogens can cause encephalitis?
TB, Lyme disease, toxoplasmosis, ticks
What is the triad of encephalitis?
Fever, headache, altered mental state
What can happen during an infectious prodrome?
High temp, rash, lymphadenopathy, cold sores
What cultures would you do?
Blood, throat swabs
What would you run a viral PCR on?
Serum, CSF
When would you run a contrast-enhanced CT?
Before LP
What will you find when you do a LP?
Lymphocytosis
If there’s no prodrome, what differentials should you think of?
Encephalopathy, hypoglycaemia
When should you start treatment?
ASAP
What drug should you start within 30 minutes of the patient arriving?
Aciclovir
What are some potential complications?
Death, autonomic dysfunction
What is encephalitits?
Inflammation of the brain parenchyma
How does encephalitis present?
Triad, meningism, confusion, drowsiness, raised ICP
What symptoms of raised ICP might be present?
Vertigo, nausea, severe headache, photophobia
