Smell
What does CN II do?
Vision
What does CN III do?
Eye movements, pupil dilation and constriction
What does CN IV do?
Superior oblique muscle
What does CN V do?
Sensory to anterior 2/3 of tongue, face, motor jaw movement
What does CN VI do?
Lateral rectus muscle
What does CN VII do?
Facial expression, lacrimal and salivary glands, taste for anterior 2/3 of tongue
What does CN VIII do?
Hearing and balance
What does CN IX do?
Motor to stylopharyngeus - swallowing and gag reflex, secretion of parotid gland, sensory and taste to posterior 1/3 of the tongue
What does CN X do?
Parasympathetic to thoracic and abdominal organs, taste in throat
What does CN XI do?
Sternocleidomastoid and trapezius
What does CN XII do?
Tongue movement
How would a lesion affecting the left optic nerve present?
Total blindness in left eye
How does a trochlear lesion present?
Double vision going down stairs
How do you test trigeminal nerve?
Sensation to the face, muscles of jaw, jaw jerk, corneal reflex
How do you test abducens?
Ability to abduct eye
How do you test facial motor function?
Inspect face for any weakness or asymmetry, smile, raise eyebrows, puff out the cheeks, frown
How do you test sensory facial function?
Touch lateral aspect of tongue with sugar/salt/vinegar
How do you test vesticulococlear?
Tuning fork, nystagmus
How do you test glossopharyngeal and vagus?
Hoarse or nasal voice, elevation of palate, gag reflex
How do you test accessory?
Turn head against resistance, shrug shoulders against resistance
How do you test hypoglossal?
Stick out tongue
