What is encephalitis?
Viral infection of brain parenchyma
What are 95% cases due to?
And the other 5%?
HSV-1
Others - CMV, EBV, HIV, toxoplasmosis (close contact with cats; parasitic infection)
RF for encephalitis?
Immunocompromised, extremes of age
Sx of encephalitis
Fever, Headache, encephalopathy, focal neurology
For focal neurology, what is the MC place affected?
What Sx would you get the?
temporal lobe
Aphasia (difficulty with language/speech)
Dx of encephalitis?
CSF may show viremia (viruses in blood) - high lymphocytes, consider PCR
MRI head
What would MRI head show?
Unilateral, temporal encephalitis
What would be seen on EEG?
Non specific EEG firing of 2Hz periodically
Tx for encephalitis?
Aciclovir (Good for HSV)
