Q

What is Alzheimers?
Pathology?

A

Beta amyloid plaques (breakdown product of amyloid precursor protein) + tall neurofibrillary tangles in cerebral cortex, increase cortical scarring + brain atrophy + decrease Ach neurotransmitter

16
Q

Dx of dementia?

A

Mini mental state exam MMSE
out of 30

Brain MRI

17
Q

MMSE ranges for normal and impaired?

A

> 25 = normal
18 - 25 = impaired
<17 = severely impaired

18
Q

What would be seen in the brain MRI?

A

cortical atrophy

19
Q

Tx for Alzheimers and vascular?

A

Conservative = social stimulation, exercise

Alzheimers = Ach ase-I (donepazil/rivastigmine)

Vascular = Anti hypertensives eg. ramipril
