Emulsification Lipids Flashcards
We use it to absorb the lipids that we eat. The lipids that we eat are macromolecules, for it to be absorb by our body, it needs to be broken down into smaller molecules. Once it enters the body it will still go to the liver to be come complex lipids to be used by the body.
Emulsification Lipids
Major emulsification Lipid
Bile Acids
Three types of Bile Acids
Cholic Acid
7-deoxycholic Acid
12-deoxcycholic Acid
Substance that can disperse and stabilize water-insoluble substances as colloidal particles in an aqueous solution
Emulsifier
Cholesterol derivative that functions as
an emulsifying agent that makes dietary lipids soluble in aqueous environment of the digestive tract
Bile acid
Approximately ____ of cholesterol produced by liver is converted to bile acids
one third
additional info about bile acids: Similar to the action of soap in washing process
A fluid containing emulsifying agents
secreted by the liver, stored in the gallbladder, and released into the small intestine during digestion
Bile
Bile Acids
● Tri- or dihydroxy cholesterol derivatives
● The carbon 17 side chain of cholesterol has been oxidized to a carboxylic acid
○ The oxidized acid side chain is bonded to an amino acid (either glycine or taurine) through an amide linkage
3,7,12-trihydroxy molecule
cholic acid
3,12-trihydroxy molecule
7-deoxycholic acid
3,7-trihydroxy molecule
12-deoxycholic acid
Bile acids are distributed through the ___
Bile
