EMU Fundamentals Flashcards
How do the car numbers work?
Motor Cars start with M - M666
Trailer Cars start with T - T1002
Numbers are above the Cab Doors and on front and back of trains and on Bulkhead Doors.
What is procedure for entering and exiting cab (3) ?
Place personal items in cab
Firmly grip both handrails and maintain 3 points of contact
Look before exiting cab.
Where are the Brake and MCH on a Comeng?
Brake - Left
Master Controller - Right
Where is the MCH on a Siemens?
MCH on LEFT
Where is the MCH on an Xtrapolis
MCH on RIGHT
Where are First Aid Kits found?
In Motor Cabs where the First Aid Symbol is displayed outside the Cab Door
What are the COMMON EMU equipment items found in every CAB?
Red & Green Flag
Fire Extinguisher
ATWS - padlocked with 5P key
ETCJC
Switch Stick
What are the interconnecting doors in a Comeng called?
Communication Doors
What are Pneumatic systems used for on all MTM Trains?
Braking Systems
Suspension Systems
What is the purpose of Isolating Cocks?
Redirects Air
Turns Equipment ON/OFF
(Open = in line with pipe)
(Closed = across pipe)
What are the 3 different connections in a coupler?
Mechanical
Pneumatic
Electrical
What is the Coupler that holds 3 car trains together?
Semi Permanent Coupler
What are the common Pneumatic components on all MTM EMUs (5)
Compressor
Reservoirs
Compressor Gov (turns compressor on/off)
Safety Valves (stops res from overcharge)
Air Dryers (removes oil/dirt/water)
How do the Driver Seats adjust in each train?
Comeng - Mechanical
Siemens - Hydraulic
XTrapolis - Electric
HCMT - Hydraulic
What are the 3 types of Braking Systems
EP - Electro-Pneumatic
- Friction Brake - all trains
ED - Electro-Dynamic (Rheostatic)
- Electrical Brake - all trains
Automatic Air
- Friction (Comeng only)
What Suspension Systems does each train have?
Airbags - Comeng, Siemens, HCMT
Spring - XTrapolis
How does the Spring Park Brake work?
Mechanical (spring) force
Stops train rolling away
Pneumatic to Release
(Applies with Spring - Releases with Air)
How do Train Whistles work?
All EMUs have pneumatic whistle
They use compressed air
Used to warn people and for Drivers to Communicate
How does each trains’ Pantograph raise?
Comeng, HCMT - Pneumatic
XTrap, Siemens - Electric
Comeng Pantographs can be raised with compressed air from
Main reservoir
Storage reservoir
Emergency 12V Battery Compressor
What is the Pipe that connects all of the Reservoirs?
Main Reservoir Pipe
What Train Equipment employs Pneumatic Systems (7)?
Friction Braking Systems
Air suspension systems (C S H)
Sanding Equipment (S H)
Whistles
Pantographs (C H)
Saloon doors (C)
Spring Brake Systems
What are the Primary Affects of Electric Shock (6)?
Shock
Burns
Unconsciousness
Respiration Stops
Reduction of Blood Circulation
Death
What do you do if you find an electric shock victim?
Make sure you are safe
Make sure others are safe
Isolate the source
What are the 2 types of Current Flow?
DC - Direct Current
AC - Alternating Current
