What are the main emotional factors?
- Happiness/Sadness
- Anger
- Fear
What is the definition of Happiness/Sadness?
An emotional state of mind. Ranging from feeling content and joy to feeling despair, grief or sorrow?
What is the impact on performance with Happiness/Sadness?
- Happiness will affect performance positively and sadness will impact negatively.
- Will impact on confidence, self-belief and resilience.
What is Fear?
Fear is an emotion induced by a perceived threat which causes you to quickly pull away or hide.
What is the impact of Fear on performance?
- Fear produces negative thoughts which directly impact on a performers confidence.
- If you fear an opponent then your own performance level is likely to drop significantly which make it easy for the opposition.
What can Fear affect?
Confidence, Motivation and decision making
What is Anger?
Anger is an emotion that is caused when a performer has been offended, denied, wronged which leads to a reaction.
It is a strong uncomfortable emotion after being provoked.
What can Anger affect?
Decision making, confidence, motivation, self-control and aggression
What is the impact of Anger on performance?
Anger without control will impact negatively and will increase the amount of poor decisions made, a players confidence (in their shots or ability) or a players motivation to continue in a proper way

Team Talks and the 3 R’s
What is a Team Talk?
A team talk is a verbal dialogue that a coach will give to his team/player usually prior to a game but can be used throughout.
What are the advantages of Team Talks?
- Gives an opportunity to emotionally charge players
- Motivates players and gets them mentally ready
- Can be used to change the mind-set or attitude of players
What does the 3R’s stand for?
- Recognise
- Regroup
- Refocus
What is the 3’Rs approach?
The 3R’s is for composure to help maintain composure after making a mistake or error.
Explain the 3 steps of the 3’Rs approach?
- Recognise that you are dwelling on the mistake and not focussing on the next piece of play.
- Regroup by interrupting the chain of thought and battle your emotions by using things like positive self talk.
- Refocus by realising what you have to do next and focus on the next piece of play.
