Emotion and motivation Flashcards
What system stimulates us to want to eat
Lateral hypothalamus
What system inhibits the want to eat
Ventromedial nucleus
What hormones stimulate hunger
Orexin, MCH
PURPLE
What is leptin
A hormone produced by fat that reduces fat
Fat –> leptin –/ body fat
Leptin inhibits hunger genes and activates the feeling of being full
What does the paraventricular nucleus do
Activate satiety
Activates the pituitary gland which activates TSH which increases metabolic rate
GREEN
What does pomc do
Activates sympathetic pathway to increase metbolism
Satiety (green)
How does eating inhibit hunger
Eating increases blood glucose which inhibits the lateral hypothalamus which stops the feeling of hunger
What hormone does a full stomach inhibit
Ghrelin which inhibits NPY so lateral hypothalamus isnt activated
Hunger(purple)
How does a full stomach activate the brainstem
Full stomach –> nutrients in intestine –> (CCK) solitary nucleus (brianstem)
What does the amygdala do
Controls fear
Lesions in amygala –> animals show less fear
Electrical stimulation of amygdala causes aggression
What does dopamine do
Encodes the reward prediction
Drives the wanting/motivation rather than pleasure
What is the Orbitofrontal cortex
“gut feeling” decision making
What is the common sense theory for emotions being made
Sensory input –> emotional experience –> physical reaction`
What is the James-Lange theory
Sensory input –> physiological reaction –> emotion
What is the Cannon-Bard theory
Emotions arise from thalamus signalling to neocortex at the same time the physiological reaction arises from thalamus signalling to hypothalamus
