What are the signs someone having a stroke?
FAST - Face - Arms - Speech - Time
Ask them to smile. Is their face drooping
Ask them to raise both arms. Does one arm drift downward?
Ask them to repeat a simple sentence. The sky is blue
Call 991 immediately and note the last time that the person was well.
What are the possible signs of a stroke?
Confusion
seizures
Sudden severe headache, worst of my life
blurred vision
What are the signs of a heart attack?
Chest pain
Sweating
Light headedness
jaw, arm, or back pain particularly on the left side
nausea/vomiting
difficulty breathing/shortness of breath
What are the sings of heart attack in women?
Unexplained anxiety or nervousness
Numbness or tingling in arms or hands
discomfort between the shoulder blades
What to do when someone is having a seizure.
Ensure your safety
Ensure your client is safe by completing the following:
If client is in a chair or standing, guide them to the ground to prevent a fall.
If possible, place something soft under the person’s head/neck to prevent injury.
Move environmental hazards that client may bump into during seizure activity.
Now call 9-1-1.
Do NOT place anything in a seizing person’s mouth.
Do NOT try to hold the person still or keep them from seizing.
What to do after a seizure?
Once the episode has passed, if the person is laying on his or her back, try to gently roll the person onto his or her left side. In the event that the person vomits, this helps ensure an open airway.
What is the phase after a seizure called?
Postictal phase
How long can the postictal phase last?
up to 48 hours after the event
What symptoms may occur during the postictal phase?
Amnesia.
Confusion.
Significant fatigue.
Numbness or weakness in one or more extremity.
What to do with client during postictal phase?
Reassure the person that medical assistance is on the way.
Reorient the person to time and place if necessary.
Keep the person calm and comfortable until medical help arrives.
If the person has an altered level of consciousness, try to keep them laying on their left side until help arrives.
If someone is experiencing Dizziness or loss of balance. What condition/conditions should be checked first?
Stroke; hypoglycemia (low blood sugar).
If someone is experiencing Sudden, severe headache. What condition conditions should be checked first?
Stroke
If someone is experiencing Blurred vision. What condition conditions should be checked first?
stroke, hypoglycemia
If someone is experiencing arm, shoulder, jaw, chest pain. What condition conditions should be checked first?
Heart attack
If someone is experiencing Sweating, shaking. What condition conditions should be checked first?
