When was the Flight to Varennes and what happened?
20th June 1791 - The Royal Family attempted to flee to Varennes in order to negotiate with the assembly in a position of power, however were discovered and brought back to Paris

- Showed Louis’ lack of support for the Constitution
- Significantly reduced support for the King
Why was the Jacobin Club split into 2 after the Flight to Varennes?
Because the Cordeliers persuaded them to join them in order to depose the King (which some did not agree with)
What did the split in the Jacobins lead to?
The creation of the Feuillants
What was the Champ de Mars Massacre?
An attempt to sign the Altar of the Fatherland that resulted in death by the National Guard
When did the Legislative Assembly come into power?
October 1791

- The King’s reluctance to accept measures he disliked
- Suspicion of the King regarding his attitude to the Revolution
- Fear of Counter-Revolutionary plots
What was the Self-Denying Ordinance?
An issue passed by Robespierre which banned members of the National Assembly from joining the Legislative Assembly
Why did Robespierre pass the Self-Denying Ordinance?
Because he didn’t want the National Assembly to regain power
