Why were the Sans-Culottes dominant?
- Power grew due to the war
- Clubs couldn’t have control without their support
- Made a significant contribution towards the overthrow of Robespierre

Why was a civil war in the Vendee a reason for the Terror?
Because people feared it would spread and result in a divide within France with people either supporting or opposing the Revolution

- Demolition of political clubs
- General economic decline
- Over 16000 deaths
What was the rising in the Vendee?
- Peasants were angered that they paid large amounts of land tax
- Local officials, priests and nobles were massacred
- 30,000 soldiers withdrawn from the war to suppress the rebellion
- Rebels imprisoned
Why was Robespierre overthrown?
- SC withdrew support as he killed the Hebertists
- Lost support from the committees as they believed he was going to make them out to be counter revolutionary
- Civilians opposes the Terror
How did the CPS resotre government authority in this period?
Law of Frimaire - Gave the CGS control of the police/security and the CPS more extensive ministers (e.g. foreign policy)
What were Agents Nationaux?
National agents appointed by the central government to monitor the enforcement of revolutionary laws
What did the convention do in relation to the armies?
Disbanded them except the ones in Paris
