(1491-1547) King of England from 1509 to 1547; his desire to annul his marriage led to a conflict with the pope, England’s break with the Roman Catholic Church, and its embrace of Protestantism. Henry established the Church of England in 1532.
Henry VIII
A German monk who became one of the most famous critics of the Roman Catholic Church. In 1517, he wrote 95 theses, or statements of belief attacking the church practices.
Martin Luther
1553-1558 AD. Catholic queen of England married to Philip II of Spain. Daughter of Catherine of Aragorn. Executed hundreds of Protestants when they refused to convert.
Mary I (Bloody Mary)
Reformed traditional Catholic teachings, and forbade the sale of indulgences.
Council of Trent
Dynasty that ruled England as a result of the War of the Roses.
Tudor Dynasty
This “virgin” queen ruled England for 50 years and was one of the most successful monarchs in English History. She supported the arts, increased the treasury, supported the exploration of the New World, built up the military, and established the Church of England as the main religion in England.
Queen Elizabeth I
Scholar who argued that the most basic religious truths could be proved by sound reasoning.
Thomas Aquinas
A well known Italian Renaissance artist, architect, musician, mathematician, engineer, and scientist. Known for the Mona Lisa and the Last Supper.
Leonardo da Vinci
(1475-1564) An Italian sculptor, painter, poet, engineer, and architect. Famous works include the mural on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel, and the sculpture of the biblical character David.
Michelangelo
English poet and dramatist considered one of the greatest English writers (1564-1616).
