which veins carry oxygenated blood from the placenta to the embryo?
umbilical veins
which veins drain the body of the embryo?
cardinal veins
which veins take blood from the yolk sac to the sinus venosus?
vitelline veins
what are the three important shunts in the foetal circulation?
ductus venosus, ductus arteriosus, foramen ovale
what does the ductus venosus do?
shunts left umbilical vein blood flow directly to the IVC, allows oxygenated blood from the placenta to bypass the liver
what does the ductus arteriosus do?
allows blood that still escapes to the right ventricle to bypass the lungs
what does the foramen ovale do?
allows blood to enter the left atrium from the right atrium, allows blood to bypass the lungs
when does the lymphatic system begin to develop?
end of 6th week
where does the lymphatic system begin to develop?
around the main veins
what does the ductus venosus become after birth?
ligamentum venosum of the liver
what does the ductus arteriosus become after birth?
ligamentum arteriosum
what does the foramen ovale become after birth?
closed fossa ovalis
