EMBRYOLOGY Flashcards
What does invagination?
turning something inside out or folded in to form a cavity/pouch
What occurs in gastrulation?
trilaminar disc forms: endoderm, mesoderm, ectoderm
What do cranial and lateral folding achieve?
a tube within a tube
Where does the urogenital system develop from?
the intermediate mesoderm
When is the intermediate mesoderm formed?
4-6 weeks
Describe how the indifferent gonad is formed
primordial germ cells move from yolk sac to intermediate mesoderm,
coelomic epithelium proliferate –> genital ridges and somatic support cells
these cells envelop the PGC to form the primitive sex cords
What are the two genital ducts?
Mesonephric (Wollfian) –> MALE
Paramesonephric (Mullerian) –> FEMALE
When does sex differentiation occur?
week 7
What triggers male development?
the presence of SRY (sex determining region of Y) transcription factor
What structure becomes sertoli cells?
somatic support cells
What structure becomes testis?
primary sex cords
What brings about degeneration of the paramesonephric duct in males?
SRY –> sertoli cells –> anti mullerian hormone
Which hormone induces formation of inner male genitalia?
testosterone from leydig cells
Which hormone induces male external genitalia and prostate?
dihydrotestosterone (DHT)
Where does the seminal vesicle develop from?
the mesonephric duct
