Embryology Flashcards
When does the nervous system begin to development?
3rd week
What layer of the trilaminar disc is the nervous system derived from?
Ectoderm
How does the neural plate form?
Notochord secretes growth factors which stimulate differentiation of overlying ectoderm into neuroectoderm
This forms neural plate
How does the neural tube form?
Lateral edges of neural plate rise to form neural folds
Neural folds fuse to form neural tube
What is the neural tube a precursor to?
Brain and spinal cord
What are neural crest cells?
Cells within the neural folds that migrate to form a distinct cell population
Give rise to a diverse cell lineage
What is neurulation?
Formation of neural tube
Done by end of 4th week of development
What are the 3 primitive vesicles that swell from the cranial end of the neural tube?
Prosencephalon
Mesencephalon
Rhombencephalon
What secondary vesicles are formed from the prosencephalon?
Telencephalon
Diencephalon
What secondary vesicle is formed from the mesencephalon?
Mesencephalon
What secondary vesicles are formed from the rhombencephalon?
Metencephalon
Myelencephalon
What does the telencephalon give rise to?
Cerebral hemispheres
Globus pallidus
Lateral ventricles
What does the diencephalon give rise to?
Thalamus
Hypothalamus
Epithalamus
Third ventricle
What does the mesencephalon give rise to?
Midbrain
Cerebral aqueduct
What does the metencephalon give rise to?
Pons
Cerebellum
Upper part of fourth ventricle
