Embedding Flashcards
Aka blocking/casting
Embedding
Process where a tissue is arranged in a precise position in the mold
Orientation
Mold consisting of two L-shaped pieces of metal
Leukhart’s embedding mold
Made up of series of interlocking pkates resting on a flat metal base forming several compartments
Compound embedding mold
Consist of special stainless steel base mold fitted with a plastic embedding ring
Plastic embedding rings with base mold
A disposable embedding mold peeled off one at a time
Peel-aways
A disposable embedding mold used in prdinary refrigerators recommended for busy routine laboratories
Plastic ice trays
A disposable embedding mold that is cheap and easy to make; for embedding celloidin and paraffin blocks
Paper boat
Recommended for embedding hard tissues such as bones and teeth and for large sextions of whole organs like eyes
Celloidin/Nitrocellulose method
First infiltrated with celloidin and subsequently embedded in paraffin mass; facilitate cuttung of large blocks of dense firm tissues (brain) and small sections of celloidin blocks
Double embedding method
Superior results for LM studies particularly in hard tissues (undercalcified bone) and for high resolution LM of renal tissue sections and bone marrow biopsies
Plastic or Resin method
Slow infiltration because of large molecule epoxy plastic
Bisphenol A/Araldite
Lower viscosity; sold as mixture of isomers
Glycerol/Epon
Can be obtained pure; very low viscosity; infiltrate the fastest
Cyclohexane dioxide/Spur
Made up of esters of acrylic or methacric acid and are used extensively for LM
Acrylic plastics
