Religious fervour. Desire for the North to have more political influence. Plot for Norfolk to marry MQoS, and restore her to the Scottish throne.

Norfolk implicated, Westmorland and Northumberland earls led it.
What threat did the Northern Rebellion pose to London?
None - never left North, made no attempt to move south. Moved towards York but then back into Durham.

Very easily - took Barnard Castle but then fled over the Scottish border and disbanded their forces as soon as a Crown force arrived.

Mass executions ordered - unknown how many really died, likely 600.

Advance of the English state in Ireland. Ireland was also deeply Catholic, English were trying to impose protestantism.

Some - never really left Ireland but part of 1596 Armada, and helped land the 1601 force of 3,000 Spanish troops.

Not at all - developed into 9 years war. 30,000 English losses. 18,000 English soldiers fighting at peak. 1598 loss at Yellow Ford. Essex sent 1599 but disobeyed Queen, Mountjoy sent after.
