When was the Essex rebellion?

List what the Earl of Essex did wrong
- secretly marrying without Elizabeth’s permission
- insulting the queen, “Her conditions are as crooked as her carcass!” - Elizabeth then punched Essex who almost drew his sword before storming out
- He made peace with the Earl of Tyrone against Elizabeth’s orders
- He then burst into the Queen’s bedchamber before she was wigged or gowned
What consequences did Devereux face for his actions?
- sweeet-wine monopoly was taken from him (his main source of income)
- he was banned from the Privy Council and Court
- he was put under house arrest
What rebellion was triggered by Mary QoS arrival in England?

What happened during the Northern Rebellion? Who was behind it?
1669
- Duke of Norfolk → wealthies British noble, but angered by his lack of influence over Elizabeth
- Planned at first to just marry Mary and solidify her position as heir to Elizabeth
- Throckmorton and Robert Dudley were part of it!
- Dudley confessed it all to the Queen and Cecil
- Norfolk fled court before being captured and tehn imprisoned
- Elizabeth called the Earl of Northumberland and the Earl of Westmorland to Court to question their loyalties
- This upset them and they created a rebellion of 5000 people who practiced mass
- As promised by the Spanish ambassador the rebellion then waited for Spanish support
- Spanish support never came because the Spanish didn’t like Mary’s pro-France stances
- The Pope hadn’t issued the Papal Bull yet so many catholics remained loyal to Elizabeth
- The rebellion was defeated and the Earls fled to Scotland

- Murder Elizabeth and marry Mary to Earl of Norfolk and giving her the throne
