Elimination Flashcards
Exam 2
Isotonic Dehydration
water vs. sodium proportional loss
V D
extracellular loss
Hypotonic dehydration:
greater sodium than water loss
burns, renal disease, severe V, D
extra-> intra
Hypertonic Dehydration:
greater water loss than sodium
diabetes, high electrolyte feedings
intra->extra
When is oral rehydration used?
mild to moderate, NOT severe
Pedialyte not clear fluids, small vol. 5ml Q 5-10 min
Gastroenteritis (diarrhea) nursing assessment:
onset, frequency, consistency, color, amount, abdominal distention, cramping, BUN, creatinine, glucose
Nursing priority for Gastroenteritis:
correct fluid vol. deficit
vomiting is NOT a contraindication for ORT, handwashing, Accurate weight and I/O, protect skin, Rotarix
When should meconium be passed?
with in 24-36 hours of life
If not- Hirschsprung disease
Hirschsprung Disease:
obstruction inadequate motility due to lack of ganglion cells in large intestine
What can Hirschsprung disease cause?
decreased blood flow, ischemia
HD assessment:
Newborn: never pass meconium w/in 48 hrs., refusal to feed, abd. distension
Infant: FTT, V, constipated, abdo. distention
Child: RIBBON LIKE FOUL STOOL, palpable mass
Diagnostic for HD:
barium enema, X-ray, rectal biopsy
Hypertrophic Pyloric Stenosis:
elongation and thickening of pylorus
olive like lump, projectile vomiting 30-60min after feed, dehydration, met. alk.,
Intussusception
telescoping slipping, edema, strangulation, tissue death,
What causes red jelly-like stools?
Intussusception
