What is Exposition
Ex of Exposition
Introduces key background information to the reader
Ex. characters, setting, conflict
What is Rising action
A series of relevant incidents that create suspense, interests, and tension in a narrative, Includes all decisions, character flaws, and background circumstances that create twists and turns
Climax
Marks a turning point that affects the final outcome of the story. The highst tension, action is at it’s peak. About three quarters of the way of the book
Falling action
Occurs right after the climax and sometimes contains a final moment of suspense
Resolution
The story comes to an end and everything is brought to a close, when the conflict has been resloved
Order of the element of plots
Exposition, rising action, climax, falling action, resolution
Define conflict
Conflict is defined as any struggle between opposing forces that brings a story
What is Internal conflict
What is the vs.
Struggle that takes place inside the mind of a character. Could be mental or emotional. Person vs. self. It is also not tangible
What is external conflict
What is the vs.
Is a struggle that occurs between a character and an outside force. Person vs. person. Person vs. Nature. Person vs. Society
Suspense
Suspense is the sense of anticipation or worry that the author makes the reader feel
Foreshadowing
When the writer gives a hint at what is to come later in the book. Helps the reader develop expection for the events and it builds anticipation of the reader.
Flashback
When the writer inserts past events. Background info, dreams, memories, flashbacks, motivation, and background to conflict
Types of plots 13-18:
Overcoming the Monster
Protagonist defeats monster/ force to save people
(Sleeping Beauty when the prince defeats the dragon)
Rags to Riches
Protagonist has everything loses everything, and gets it back
(Cinderella)
Hero’s Journey
Hero goes on an adventure, faces a conflict, wins, comes home changed or transformed
(Hunger Games + Mulan)
