Elements, compounds and mixtures Flashcards
What is Matter?
Can also be classified into Pure substances and mixtures
What are pure susbtances?
Are substances which have a specific composition and cannot be separated into ay constituents.
What are elements?
Are substances made from one type of atom and is represented by a symbol. Are the building blocks of all substances.
What are types of elements?
Metals, non-metals and metalloids.
What are compounds? What are the examples?
are substances of two or more elements that are chemically combined in definite proportions. These are represented by formulas (Water, salt, and baking soda).
What are the formulas of water, salt, and baking soda?
H2O, NaCl, NaHCO3
What are mixtures?
Combination of two or more elements and/or compounds that retain their chemical identities
What are Homogeneous mixtures?
components are evenly distributed throughout thus, the components can not be distinguished from one another. Has only one phase and is also called as solutions
What are homogeneous mixtures also called as?
solutions
What are the examples of homogeneous mixtures?
vinegar, soft drinks, mixture of water and alcohol.
What are Heterogeneous Mixtures?
Components are not evenly distributed thus, the components can be distinguished from one another. Has two or more phases.
What are the examples of Heterogeneous Mixtures?
oil and water, pizza, gravel and sad.
