Elements and compounds Flashcards
What is an element?
An element is a substance that only contains one type of atom
What is a compound?
A compound is a substance that is made of more than one type of atom chemically bonded together
What is a mixture?
A mixture is a substance containing two or more different types of element that are not chemically bonded together
How do you know that a substance is an element?
You can find it on the periodic table
What does the periodic table show us?
The periodic table shows us all of the element that exist
What is the difference between the elements in red and the elements in yellow on this periodic table

The elements in red are metals and the elements in yellow are non-metals
What process do you need to perform to turn a mixture of atoms into a compound?
A chemical reaction
What are the main properties of metals?
They are not brittle (they bend)
They are shiny
They contuct heat easily
They conduct eletricity
Some of them are magnetic
What is the main difference between a mixture and a compound?
A mixture can be seperated but a compound cannot be.
Is this substance an element, compound or a mixture?
Explain why you think this

This is a mixture
You know this is a mixture becuase there are different types of atom not chemically bonded together
Is this substance an element, mixture of compound?
Explain why you think this is

This is a compound
You know this is a compound becuase there are two different types of atom and they are chemically bonded together
Is this substance an element, mixture or compound?
Explain why you think this is

This is a compound
You know this is a compound becuase there are two different types of atom that are chemically bonded together.
Is this substance an element, mixture or compound?
Explain why you think this is

This is an element
You know this is an element becuase there is more than one type of atom chemically bonded together
Is this substance an element, mixture or compound?
Explain why you think this is

This is an element
You know this is an element becuase there is only one type of atom
Why are the properties of a compound different to the properties of the elements that make them up
This is becuase the chemical bonds change the way that the atoms in the material behave
What method do you use to seperate an undissolved solid from a liquid?
Filtration
What method do you use to get a dissovled solid out of a liquid?
Evaporaiton
What do you use to seperate a metal from a non-metal?
A magnet
What method do you use if you want to seperate two liquids from each other and keep both of them?
Distillation
What method do you use to seperate two liquids of different densities (so one of them floats on the other)
Pouring off
Is this substance a compound, mixture or element?
What is its name?
This is a compound becuase it has more than one type of atom chemically bonded together
It is water (hydrogen oxide)
Is this substance a compound, element or mixture?
What is its name?
This is a compound because there is more than one type of atam chemically bonded toegether
It is called carbon dioxide (becuase it has one carbon and two oxygens)
Is this substance a compound, element or mixture?
What is its name?
This is an element becuase it only has one type of atom
It is called oxygen
