Electromagnetic radiation Flashcards
Standarized tests
What is the transfer of energy without the transfer of matter is called ?
Wave notion
What are waves able to do ?
Waves are able to carry energy from one place to another without moving any matter over the same distance
What are transverse waves ?
Transverse waves are waves which move at right angles to the direction the wave is travelling
What longitudinal or compression waves ?
Longitudinal or compression waves are waves which move back and forth to the direction they are travelling
What is frequency ?
The number of complete waves passing through a point in one second
What is wavelength ?
The distance between two crests or two troughs, or between two compressions or rarefactions
What is amplitude ?
The maximum distance a wave extends from its middle positiom
What kind of waves are electromagnetic waves (EM waves) ?
They are transverse waves
What does white light consist of ?
White light consists of all the colors of the visible spectrum
What does heating a substance do ?
Heating a substance adds energy to its particles.
If the temperature of a substance increases, then its particles move faster, spreading the particles apart and the substance expands.
What are the 3 ways heat transfer happens ?
conduction, convection and radiation.
What determines the speed of sound ?
The mediun
Hard surfaces vs soft surfaces ?
Hard surfaces such as concrete and tiles reflect sound waves (i.e. echo).
Soft surfaces such as fabric, carpet and cushions absorb sound.
What do sounds with a higher frequency have ?
Have a higher pitch
What do sounds that are louder have ?
Hiave higher amplitude
