Ecosystems Flashcards
Test
Ecosystem ?
An ecosystem is made up of organisms living together in a community, and their interactions with their physical surroundings.
What are the two factors of an ecosystem ?
Abiotic factors are the non-living components in an ecosystem (e.g. air quality, humidity, sunlight, rainfall, etc).
Biotic factors are the living components in an ecosystem (e.g. predators, prey, competitors, etc.)
Predation ?
type of feeding relationship where the predator obtains it food by killing and eating another animal (the prey).
Competition ?
Competition involves organisms that have one or more resources in common
Symbiosis definition ?
two organisms live together in a close relationship that is beneficial to at least one of them.
Mutualism ?
relationship where two organisms live closely together and both benefit
Commensalism ?
relationship in which one organism is benefited and the other is unaffected
Parasitism ?
one species benefits and the other one suffers
Why is food vital for an ecosystem ?
Source of matter and energy required by living things
What are producers ?
Organisms that can produce their own food by photosynthesis
What are consumers ?
Organisms that eat other organisms or producers.
What are decomposers ?
bacteria and fungi which break down dead plant and animals, and recycle matter for producers to reuse.
What is a food chain ?
shows the direction in which energy flows during feeding
What is a food web ?
Many connected food chains
True or False : Is matter cycled in ecosystems ?
True
