Chapter 5: Electrical energy Flashcards
Standarized test
What is an electric circuit ?
An electric circuit is a closed loop that provides a path for transfer of electrical energy from a power source to an electrical component.
What do electrical circuit need ?
A source of electrical energy, a load or component and wires
What is a circuit diagram ?
A circuit diagram is a visual representation of the different components of the circuit
What do we mean when we say ‘electric current’ ?
An electric current is a measure of the rate of flow of charges passing through a point in the wire
How is electric current measure and what is the unit called ?
Electrical current is measured using an ammeter and its unit is ampere(A) or amps
What is voltage ?
Voltage is the measure of the amount of energy supplied to the charges by the power source. It is measured by a voltmeter and its unit is volts
What is resistance ?
Resistance is the measure of how difficult it is for an electrical current to flow through a material or component.
How is resistance measured ?
By a multimeter and its unit is in ohms
Conductors vs Insulators ?
Conductors are materials that have low resistance and allow electric current pass through them easily where bas insulators have high resistance and don’t allow electric current to pass through easily
What is Ohm’s law ?
Resistance= Voltage/Current
Series circuit ?
All the components are connected one after another to form a single loop
Parrallel circuit ?
there are multiple paths for current to flow through.
What is electromagnetism ?
Electromagnetism is when a magnetic field is generated as electric current flows along a wire.
What is a solenoid ?
A solenoid is a looped current-carrying coil, which creates a magnetic field and can be its strength can be increased by putting an iron rod inside it
What happens in an electric motor ?
current is passed through a coil which produces a temporary magnetic field which interacts with the permanent magnetic field of the magnet, causing the coil to spin.
