To memorise for an exam
What is a disease ?
A disease is anything that causes the body to stop working properly.
Difference between and infectious and non-infectious disease ?
An infectious diseases can be spread from one person to another, whereas non-infectious diseases cannot.
What is a pathogen ?
is a biological agent that causes an infectious disease in a host organism.
What is bacteria ?
Bacteria are microscopic, unicellular organisms.
Do pathogenic bacteria produce toxins which are harmful to human cells?(True or False)
True
What are some examples of pathogenic bacteria
salmonella, pneumonia, whooping cough, tetanus, diphtheria and meningococcal
What are some methods Pathogens can enter your body ?
Food and water, Breathing in, Cuts and wounds and sexual contact
What is the first line of defence in the immune system ?
acts as a barrier to prevent pathogens from entering the body (e.g. skin, fluids, hairs, stomach acid)
What is the second line of defence ?
kicks in when a pathogen enters the body tissues.
Damaged body cells release histamines which causes inflammation to the area (i.e. red, hot and swollen)
Special white blood cells called neutrophils arrive to consume the pathogens
What is the third line of defence ?
The lymph nodes in the lymphatic system have WBCs called lymphocytes (which make unique antibodies that immobilise specific pathogen) and macrophages (which consume & destroy pathogens
