Electrolysis Flashcards
What is electrolysis?
The break down of a substance using electricity
Why is electrolysis useful?
Can remove reactive metals from their compounds
What are electrolytes?
Substances that can be broken down by electricity
Why can electrolytes conduct electricity?
Because they contain ions
Why do electrolytes only conduct when molten or dissolved?
As there are free electrons in the liquid but not in solid
What is PANIC?
Positive Anode, Negative Is Cathode
What are cations?
Positive, metal ions
What are anions?
Negative, non metal ions
Where do positive ions go to?
The cathode
Where do negative ions go to?
The anode
What has more water in it; concentrated or dilute?
Dilute
What are the 2 types of products available from electrolysis?
Aqueous and concentrated
What is an aqueous solution?
A substance dissolved in water
What is OILRIG?
Oxidation is loss of electrons, reduction is gain of electrons
What are ions?
Charged particles
