Electrolysis Flashcards
What is electrolysis?
It is the use of an electric current to bring about a chemical reaction
What is an electrolyte?
It is a compound which when molten or dissolved in water will conduct electricity
What is essential for electrolysis to?m occur
A melted or dissolved electrolyte as the ions need to be free to move through throughout
What are negative ions called?
Anions
What are positive ions called?
Cations
What are cat ions attracted to?
Cathode
What do anions attract to
Anode
Is the anode positive or minus?
The anode is positive electrode
Is a cathode a positive or negative electrode?
Negative cathode
What are innert electrons?
They are electrodes that do not take part in the chemical reaction
E.g. platinum rod
What is an active electrode?
An electrode that takes part in the chemical reaction
They are used in electroplating
