Electrocardiogram Technician: Vocabulary Flashcards
Anemia
a condition where blood does not have enough healthy red blood cells.
Ballooning and weakened area in an artery. Occurs in aorta, brain, back of knee, intestine, or spleen.
Aneurysm
Angina
type of chest pain caused by reduced blood flow from heart. Symptom of coronary artery disease
abnormal heart rhythm
arrest arrhythmia
When the heart stops beating
arrest
Build up of fats, cholesterol, or other substances on the artery walls
atherosclerosis
Constellation of structural and functional changes that occur in the heart of people that train for prolonged durations
atletic heart syndrome
Asystole
when heart’s electrical system fails entirely
Pulseless Electrical Activity
When your heart stops because the electrical activity in your heart is too weak to make a beat.
CVA
also known as Cerebrovascular accident is a stroke where damage to the brain is caused by interruption of its blood supply
A chronic condition where the heart does not pump blood well as it should
congestive heart failure or CHF
Coronary Artery Disease
Damage or disease in heart’s major blood vessels. Coronary arteries struggle to supply the heart with enough blood, oxygen, and nutrients.
Embolus
a blood clot caused by mass in blood stream that causes a blockage
An infection of the heart’s inner lining usually involving the heart valves
endocarditis
Hypertension
High blood pressure. Force of blood against artery walls is too high
Low blood pressure that causes fainting or dizziness because brain is not getting enough blood.
Hypotension
Leukemia
Cancer of blood forming tissue, hindering ability to fight infection
Cancer of white blood cells
Sound of blood flowing in heart due to heart exertion during exercise or diseased heart valve or other abnormalities
murmur
MI or Myocardial infraction
Heart attack caused by decreased blood flow to portion of myocardium
Myocarditis
Inflammation of your heart muscle (myocardium). Weakens heart muscle, making difficult to pump blood.
Swelling and irritation of the thin sack like layer surrounding the heart (Pericardium) that causes sharp chest pains
pericarditis
Inflammation of a vein
phlebitis
When it affects deeper vein, it is called deep vein thrombosis (dvT)
Sickle Cell Anemia
A group of disorders that causes red blood cells to become misshapen and break down.
Wound on leg or ankle caused by abnormal or damaged veins
Stasis Ulcer
