Q

Complete tracing from time of application of device to removal

A

continuous monitoring

Some devices have an event marker where patient tells the machine to start and when symptoms are felt.

Q

What is intermittent monitoring?

A

Type of monitoring placed on patient for extended period of time, but is depended on patient reporting

May not capture all abnormalities, but can be evaluated quicker than continuous monitoring.

Q

What is transtelephonic monitoring?

A

Primarily used to evaluate the function of a pacemaker and can be left on for 24-48 hours.

For patient convenience, the device can be connected to cellular phone to transmit the ecg to either a clinic or lab

Q

Post-symptom event monitoring

A

monitoring used when a patient is experiencing symptoms.

It comes in all shapes and sizes and can be used to document dysrhythmias that last more than a few seconds at a time

Q

What is loop memory monitoring?

A

Monitoring that can be left on patient for 30 days or more and can record up tp five minutes of rhythms.

Can be used to provide information, before, during, and after a cardiac event occurs such as fainting

Q

What are the five things a patient should know for ambulatory monitoring?

A

Wear loose fitting clothes and reduce artifacts

With monitor, sponge baths are acceptable, no swimming, showers, or baths

When sleeping, try to not put tensions on the leads as it can cause artifacts

Avoid magnets and metal detectors with high voltage areas as it can cause artifacts

Make sure the equipment is functioning properly

Q

What are the materials needed for ambulatory monitoring?

A

Electrodes to attach to chest at doctor’s office

Wires attach electrodes to small, portable recording device

16
Q

Make sure that patient’s log and data storage devices are properly labeled with

A

patients name, ID number, physician name, and other information required by your facility.

17
Q

What are the factors that affect the accuracy of taking tracing?

A

Improper lead attachment
Incomplete or falsified log
Patient fails to maintain a normal routine

18
Q

Why is RH factor important with pregnancy?

A

for transfusion because it determines if the blood of two people are compatible with being mixed.

19
Q

Abnormal results from EKG tracing may indicate

A

electrical conduction defect (SA node, AV node, and Purkinje Fibers)
Rhythm Abnormality
Another underlying condition

Abnormal rhythms may require additional testing

20
Q

What is Holter Monitoring?

A

A type of ambulatory electrocardiography device

A portable device for cardiac monitoring for at least 24 hours

Records electrical activity of the heart continuously over 24 hours while away from doctor’s office.
