Q

Advantages of Electro Acupuncture (4)

A

(1) - time-saving
(2) - The amount of stimulation can be objectively measured and regulated
(3) - It produces a higher and more continuous level of stimulation
(4) - It can supplement, or to some degree, substitute for needle puncture

Definition

A

After a needle has been inserted at a point and the Qi sensation obtained, an electric current is passed through the needle both to strengthen and alter the nature of stimulation.

Methods for Electro Acupuncture (4)

A

(1) Make sure the machine is turned off
(2) Conduct wires to the needles
(3) Gradually increase the current so as to monitor the patient’s reaction
(4) Treatment time: 10-20min, as long as 4-5 hours

Q

Selecting Points for Electro Acupuncture (2)

A

(1) If two points complete the circuit: identical to regular acupuncture
(2) If only one point is selected: the other electrode can be held in the hand or taped to the site

Q

Remarks (Things to keep in mind) (4)

A

(1) Guard against fainting
(2) Prevent bending or breaking of needles
(3) Adjust the power very slowly
(4) When opposing points differ markedly in sensation, check the machine or wires - Points below the elbow and knee or on the face are more sensitive

Other Considerations

A
  • Some oxidation on the surface of the needle, preventing proper conduction of the electric current
  • A needle has been used for burning moxa; a gold coloration –> Attach the clip to the body of the needle
  • DON’T USE SILVER NEEDLES - because they are softer than stainless steel, and they may electrolyze in the body very quickly and may result in in a toxic reaction
  • Contraindicated for patients with a history of heart diseases. It is particularly important in such cases that the electrical path DOES NOT CROSS THE HEART

9
Q

Can you use silver needles in electro acupuncture? why or why not?

A

Do not use silver needles because they are softer than stainless steel, and they may electrolyze in the body very quickly and may result in a toxic reaction
