9
Q

Approximately how long will electrical power be supplied from the two batteries?

A

12 to 14 minutes on the ground prior to start (because the batteries are supplying power to all systems).
40 minutes in the air because the EDL has shed the appropriate load.

Q

What happens when the ‘Shed Buses’ switch is set to override?

A

On the ground the shed buses are forced closed. Taxi light, flash lights and cabin services.
In the air, the shed buses are forced closed unless the EDL logic prevents (i.e. only three generators available).

13
Q

What is a hot bus?

A

A bus that is connected directly to the battery. All components connected to the hot bus do not need a cockpit switch to be switched on.

14
Q

What is Electrical Distribution Logic (EDL) and what is it’s function?

A

It is software, housed in the back up lead acid battery, that controls the entire electrical system (the brains of the electrical system).
It’s primary goal is to provide two seperate electrical networks with two generators (one primary, and one back up) on each.
It’s secondary goal is to provide one electrical network with two generators (one primary, and one backup).

16
Q

During APU start, what is the EDL logic?

***

A

Battery 2 starts the APU, battery 1 protects the electrical system from potential spikes.

17
Q

What is the advantage of a NiCad over a lead acid battery?

A

The NiCad discharge remains high and drops off at the end, whereas the lead acid battery steadily discharges. The NiCad battery will power all systems for longer, the lead acid battery will gradually lose systems.

18
Q

When the GPU is plugged in, how does the EDL achieve its goals?

A

It doesn’t. When the GPU is plugged in the generator line contactors open. Without generators the EDL is unable to achieve its goals.

19
Q

How is the EMB-145 electrical system wired?

A

In parallel.

20
Q

What is the disadvantage of NiCad batteries over lead acid type batteries?

A

NiCad batteries are subject to thermal runaway.

21
Q

How many generators does the EMB-145 have and what are they rated to?

A

A total of five. Each AE3007A1 engine has two generators, and the APU has one generator. Each generator is capable of powering the entire system on its own, rated at 400 amps.

22
Q

What is a Generator Control Unit (GCU) and what is it’s function?

A

The GCU is software that controls the generator line contactors. They function to open and close contactors within the electrical circuitry controlled by the EDL.

23
Q

What systems are connected to the lead acid battery?

A

The Electrical Distribution Logic (EDL) and the Generator Control Unit (GCU).

24
Q

When is an engine on the EMB-145 considered running?

A

At 56.4%. At this rate the engine is capable of driving the generators.

25
Q

What is the function of the central bus?

A

It is the only plug in point for the APU and GPU and provides the separation point for the two networks the EDL creates.

26
Q

What is the minimum number of generators required such that we have all of our services?

A

Three. However we will be operating on one network only.

27
Q

When would we have access to all of our electrical services?

A

With at least three generators. With 4 or 5 generators we have two seperate networks, with 3 generators we have only one network.

28
Q

With a maximum of two generators operating, what does the EDL do?

A

It removes the shed buses.

29
Q

With a loss of all generators, what does the EDL do?

A

It sheds the shed buses and DC 1 and DC 2 buses.

This is the electrical emergency configuration.

30
Q

What components does the DC electrical system comprise of?

A
4 engine driven generators (28V 400 amp)
1 APU starter-generator (28V 400 amp)
2 NiCad batteries (24V 44 amp/hr)
1 Lead Acid backup battery (24V 5 amp/hr)
External power supply (GPU)
31
Q

What components does the AC system comprise of?

A

1 single phase static inverter.

Converts 28V DC into 115V AC.

32
Q

How does the EDL function when the GPU is plugged in?

A

The EDL gives priority to the GPU over all other power sources.
Neither the batteries nor generators can operate in parallel with the GPU.
With the GPU plugged in and selected by the crew, all other electrical supply with be disconnected from the system.

33
Q

What services are connected to the ground service bus?

A
Passenger cabin lights.
Lavatory lights.
Gallery lights.
Courtesy and stair lights
Cockpit dome lights.
Baggage and service compartment lights.
It will only be powered when the “GPU avail” inscription on and the batteries off.
