electrical safety Flashcards
what are the dangers of damages insulation
short circuit- which will lead to heat and fire
risk of electric shock
dangers of overheate cables
too much current- which will lead to heat and can cause fire
how to prevent overheating
use thick copper cables which have a bigger mass and dont change temperature as much
dangers of damp conditions
water conducts electricity better than air but less then metals
dangers of excess current
overloading plugs and extension leads can draw too much current from the mains supply than the ires can take hwch lead to overheating cables and fire risk
what do fuses and cause
duses are thin metal wires, that melt or blow when too much current flows through them, thus cutting off the circuit.
use formula P= I x V
what do circuit breakers cause
circuit breakers are a similar desighn to a relay, except it opens a switch when too much current flows.
1) too much current flows- coild becomes a strong magnet
2) attracts iron catch which breaks circuit
3) circuit can be reset ( once current is smaller)
