electrical safety Flashcards
common electrical hazards include:
damaged insulation, cables overheating and damp conditions
what is double insulation?
a plastic insulator surrounds each individual wire and all 3 wires together
what is earthing?
an appliance with a metal case has a wire connected directly to the ground called an earth wire
how do fuses prevent damage?
if the current inside the fuse becomes too large the wire inside heats up and melts, breaking the circuit and stopping the current
how do circuit breakers reduce the risk of damage?
they contain electromagnets that break the circuit in specific areas of a building if the current exceeds a certain value
where are circuit breakers found?
in a fuse box
the live wire carries?
most of the power to the circuit
the live wire has a voltage of?
around 230 volts
the neutral wire has a voltage of?
around 0 volts
where does the earth wire carry charge to if there is a fault?!
directly to the ground
what is the conducting part of the wide made out of?
copper or some other type of metal
what material are wires covered in?
an insulating material such as rubber
why are circuit breakers better than fuses?
they don’t melt and break so therefore they can be reset and used again and they work much faster
