There are several style of connectors available for use in aircraft. The most common are those built to:
Military specifications
How are plugs and receptacles identified?
By where they are located
*if a plug is in receptacle #5, those are their identifiers and must stay in the same location
Plugs are normally located on what side?
removal side
Receptacles are normally located on what side?
Fixed side
Which side normally contains the power?
The socket side
What side normally contains the ground?
The Pin Side
Pin and socket contacts have an inspection hole to ensure what?
that the proper length of wire is inserted into the contact
Military Specified connectors are separated into what?
types and classes. There are then variations to this.
What are Class A connectors for?
General purpose w/ a solid one-piece back shell
What are Class B connectors for?
Used to access solder
Back shell is split in two
What are Class C connectors for?
Pressurizing
Used on walls and bulkheads
What are Class E connectors for?
Environmental connector with moisture sealing grommet in the back shell
What are Class K connectors for?
for when current flow is vital and may be exposed to a continuous open flame
Fireproof
What are Class R connectors for?
Intended to replace class E where short length and lighter weight is required
Similar to class E
What is the most common and preferred type of contact?
Crimped
most commonly used tool system is by Daniels Manufacturing Corporation
What needs to be determined BEFORE crimping?
If the connector is front release or rear release
What are the extractor sizes and colors?
20 - Red
#16 - Blue
#12 - Yellow
What does BIN stand for?
Basic Identification Number
MIL-C-39029 Contacts: Each digit of the BIN code is designated on the contact
by what?
a color band or is stamped on the wire barrel end or the contact shoulder.
The width of the first band is approximately twice the width of the second and third bands
What makes a stripped wire not acceptable?
nicked or cut strands
How do you seal unused holes within a connector?
Install “dog bones”
