9
Q

what is arthrodesis?

A

surgical stiffening or fusion of a joint in a position or function.

The remaining hyaline cartilage and sunchondral bone is removed and the joint is stablaized resulting in bony union and fusion.

10
Q

what isnt so good about arthrodesis?

A

A

infection of bone

19
Q

how can bone get infected?

A

penetrating trauma
surgery
spread from another infection elsewhere

Q

what is a sequestrum?

A

a dead fragment of bone

21
Q

who is most likely to get acute osteomyelitis?

A

children or immunocompromised adults

22
Q

what is a brodie’s abscess?

A

bone walls off abscess with a thin rim of sclerotic bone

23
Q

when does chronic osteomyelitis develop?

A

from untreated acute osteomyelitis

24

A

S.aureus
H.influenzae
group A strep
Enterobacter

27
Q

What organism causes osteomyelitis in adults?

A

S.aureus mainly

sometimes enterobacter

28
Q

What organism causes osteomyelitis in sickle cell patients?

A

s.aureus mainly!

29
Q

how is osteomyelitis treated?

A

acute-bets guess antibiotics unless abscess which needs surgical drainage

30
Q

who is at risk of developing osteomyelitis of the spine?

A

poorly controlled diabetics
iv drug abusers
immunocompromised people

31
Q

what tests do you want to do for osteomyelitis?

A

MRI-delinated extent of infection and abscess formation

blood culture-causative organisim
