Function of Elections
Linkage institution- link voters to government.
Nominate candidates for office.
Make the government legitimate.
Inform the voters.
Provide opportunities to replace political leaders.
Primaries
Elections within the party to nominate candidates for office.
Frontloading
The early primaries are more important.
This is because they provide free publicity and set the tone for the election.
Caucus
A gathering of people that have a similar interest
Meet, discus, and select their candidate.
Closed Primary
Only registered members of the party are allowed to vote
Difficult for opponents to sabotage
Independents can’t vote
Blanket Primary
Names of many parties and different candidates are on the ballots.

Open Primary
All registered voters may vote.
Allows independents to vote.
Opposing party has the ability to sabotage.
