Divisions within a standing committee.
Standing Commmittee
Permanent, exists in both houses
Deals with a particular topic or area
Analyzes, studies, makes recommendations, and conducts hearings over the bill.
May reject, accept, or amend them.
Select Committee
Temporary, exists in both houses
Investigates scandals or problems.
Congressional oversight
Joint Committee
Temporary, composed of members of both houses
Oversee a particular program
Conference Committee
Temporary, composed of members of both houses
Negotiate differences in the final bills approved by the house and senate
House Rules Committee
Permanent, exists only in the House
Makes rules in the House
Decide when the bill will be discussed by putting the bill on the calendar
Decide rules for debate
