Subluxation of the radial head
Nursemaid’s elbow
Common in kids 1-5
Annular ligament slips off radial head and gets trapped in radiohumeral joint
Arm close to body with elbow slightly flexed or fully extended with forearm pronated
Manual reduction by supination/flexion or hyperpronation
Medial Epicondylitis
Golfer’s elbow
Overuse injury from repeated wrist flexion
Lateral Epicondylitis
Tennis Elbow
Overuse from repeated extension
Olecranon Bursitis
Miner’s/Student’s elbow
Inflammation of olecranon bursa
Inflammatory arthritis, gout, trauma, hemorrhage, or sepsis
Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
Caused by compression of median nerve
Pain and paresthesia along the 1st 3 and a half digits
Tinel’s Test for carpal Tunnel
Tapping on median nerve
Phalen’s Test for carpal Tunnel
Flex wrists against each other to compress the nerve
De Quervain Tenosynovitis
Recurrent inflammation of the tendon and synovial sheath covering extensor pollicis brevis and abductor pollicis longus
+ finkelstein test
Trigger finger
Pain, locking, and clicking of MCP joint
Most common on ring finger
Dupuytren’s contracture
Fibrosis of the palmar fascia which causes progressive stiffening of the joint and inability to fully extend the finger
Scaphoid fx
Pain on radial aspect of wrist and reduced grip strength after FOOSH
Snuff box tenderness
Tenderness with scaphoid compression
Boxer’s Fracture
Fracture of the metacarpal neck
Pain on dorsum of hand after direct trauma
Colle’s Fx
Wrist pain with possible dinner fork deformity
Most common fx of upper extremity
Rheumatoid Arthritis
Inflammatory polyarthritis causing deformity of the joints through damage of bone and cartilage
Most commonly affects MCP and PIP joints of the finger
Stiff joints in the morning
