Elbow Joint Flashcards
Which bones make up the elbow joint?
DIstal humerus
Proximal radius
Proximal ulna
Which articulations make up the elbow joint?
made up of 2 articulations: the humeroulnar and the humeroradial
What type of joint is the elbow joint?
A hinge type of synovial joint
allows movement in flexion / extension of the sagittal plane
Describe the humeroradial joint
The head of the radius articulates with the capitulum and radial fossa on the distal humerus
Describe the humeroulnar joint
the trochlea of the distal humerus articulates with the trochlea notch of the ulna
What are the 3 ligaments of the elbow joint?
Medial collateral ligament: (anterior, posterior and transverse)
anterior: from medial epicondyle to coronoid process
posterior: from medial epicondyle to olecranon
transverse: across ulna from coronoid process to olecranon
Lateral collateral ligament
Annular ligament: wraps around the head of the radius and attaches on either side to the ulna, helps to form the proximal radioulnar joint. the internal circumference of the annular ligament is lined with articular cartilage to reduce friction on the radial head
Which 3 nerves innervate the elbow joint?
articular branches of the:
musculocutaneous
ulnar
radial
