EL8:2 Spectacular Metals Flashcards
What is formed when group 2 metals react with oxygen?
A metal oxide.
What is formed when elements react with water?
Hydroxides and hydrogen.
What is formed when a metal oxide or hydroxide reacts with an acid?
A salt and water.
What is the general formula for group 2 carbonates?
XCO3(s)
What do carbonates break down to form when heated?
An oxide and carbon dioxide.
What happens to the solubility of group 2 hydroxides as you go down the group and why?
The solubility increases, as energy holding the ionic lattice together decreases.
What happens to the solubility of group 2 sulfates as you go down the group?
The solubility decreases.
What are group 2 carbonates insoluble in?
Water.
What do group 2 carbonates react with?
Acid.
What is formed when a metal carbonate reacts with acid?
A salt, water and carbon dioxide.
What can sometimes be produced on the carbonate and what does it do?
An insoluble sulfate layer, that prevents further reaction.
What is thermal decomposition?
The break down of a compound through heat.
What gets harder as you move down the group?
Carbonates become harder to decompose, and require a higher temperature.
Why do carbonates become harder to decompose as you go down the group?
Their thermal stabilities increase.
What is charge density a measure of?
The concentration of charge on the cation.
