What are advantages of organic egg farming?
Live on organic land, fed organic food
What are disadvantages of organic egg farming?
Very expensive, need people to collect eggs
What are advantages of free range egg farming?
Good welfare of chickens, can eat naturally, chickens have the option to go inside/outside
What are the disadvantages of free range eggs?
More expensive, takes more space, collecting eggs is more difficult
What are the advantages of barn egg farming?
Chickens are kept warm, free to move
What are the disadvantages of barn egg farming?
Overcrowding, very loud, chickens never see day light
What are the advantages of cage/battery egg farming?
Cheap, less space, automated, efficient
What are the disadvantages of cage/battery egg farming?
Animal cruelty, disease among the chickens
What are the three different classes of eggs?
A - good quality
B - lower quality
C - weak or damaged shells
What does the British lion mark mean?
The hens are vaccinated against salmonella
The hens hygiene is strictly controlled
The eggs are produced to the highest standard of food safety
What is the job of the egg shell in an egg?
Protects the egg
What is the job of the shell membrane in an egg?
On the inside on the shell and slow down the loss of water evaporating from the egg and prevent bacteria entering the egg
What is the job of the the egg yolk in an egg?
Feeds the developing chick if the egg was fertilised
