Eggs Flashcards
Difference between bird egg and reptile egg
bird - twister, lots of albumen, air space, hard shell
Reptile - no twister, little albumen, no air space, rubbery shell
Why do reptile have rubbery shell?
Reptile shells are rubbery shell bc they contain little albumen and to absorb water from environment
Function of yolk sac?
provide nutrition for embryo
Albumen function
supply embryo w/ moisture and nutrients + absorbs shock
Twisters function?
turn yolk so embryo remains on top closer to mother’s warm body
How do bird vs reptile incubate their eggs
bird - lay on them
Reptile - cover their eggs with sand instead
How do the eggs get warmth for bird vs reptile?
bird - twisters turn yolk so embryo remains on top closer to the mother’s warm body
reptile - eggs rely on sun to provide warmth
How do hard eggshell absorb oxygen?
shell has pores that allow air to reach embryo
-shell membrane with blood that absorbs oxygen to carry to embryo
-air space
Which reptile’s egg is the closest to the bird’s egg
crocodile
Which reptile has the least albumen? Most?
Least - snakes or lizard’s egg
Most - turtle’s egg + crocodile’s egg
4 extra embryonic membranes during embryonic life? and their functions
Yolk sac -provide nutrition for embryo
Amnion - protects embryo
Chorion - helps gas exchange
between oxygen & carbon dioxide
Allantois - stores nitrogenous wastes and helps respiration
Shell function
protect egg and internal structure
