Church became more Protestant, Northumberland’s changes more radical than Somerset

How did Northumberland make Book of Common Prayer more Protestant?
Took out words “take,eat,this is my body”
Replaced them with a link to radical Protestant belief that Communion was memorial of Jesus’ death
What happened to chantries under Somerset?
Chantries abolished, guilds abolished
What did Northumberland do to vestments?
Made them plainer
What did Somerset do to celebration?
Candles, processions were banned and icons of Virgin Mary, stained glass banned
Led to iconoclasm
What did Somerset introduce?
Injunctions, visitations (check churches were implementing changes), elevation of host removed
What did Northumberland do to celebrations?
Removed elaborate ceremonies from prayer book and restricted use of music
What did Northumberland rewrite?
Baptism and burial services
Removed alters and replaced them with communion tables
Reasons for Religious Change?
Government - both Northumberland/Somerset were convinced Protestants
Radical Action - condemned images of saints, led to inonclasm, removed alters before it became official
Economy - money from chantries funded war with Scotland
What did Treason Act of 1547 do?
allowed discussion, printing of religion, exiled Protestants came back, religious meeting often ended in violence though
Act of Uniformity 1549
Everyone worships in same way, bread and wine provided at congregations, regularise prayer
What did new Prayer Book in English lead to?
Prayer Book rebellion - 5500 died
What did the dismantling of 6 acts do?
Strengthen use of English language in services and Bibles, no more Latin
