Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), Title II
This law guarantees that parents can access their children’s records and also prohibits release of school records without parental permission or student permission once the student is 18 years old
The Family Education Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), 1974
This is a federal statute made up of federal grant made up of several grant programs targeted at helping the states to educate students with disabilities; specifically lists types of disabilities that render a child entitled to special education
Individuals with Disabilities Act (IDEA), 1990
This is a written educational plan that is required under Public Law 94-142, the IDEA
Individualized Education Plan (IEP)
The court case ruled that federally funded schools must provide their non-English speaking student with either English instruction or instruction in their native language.
Lau v. Nichols, 1974
This law falls under civil rights law; enacted 1973; forbids organization and employers from preventing individuals with disabilities an equal opportunity to receive program benefits and services.
Section 504 of the Vocational Rehabilitation Act, 1973
This public law was passed in 1975; created to ensure free and appropriate education is provided to handicapped children ages 3 to 21; least restrictive environment

This ordinance helped establish a way to fund public education

Plessy v. Ferguson, 1896
This court case argued that all students be required to attend public school from ages 8-16. It was later ruled that they cannot be required to attend public school, but they are required to attend either public or private
