Education: pupils sexual and gender identities Flashcards
Double standards
Moral standards are different for different groups, particularly the standards of seuxal morality.
Paecher (verbal abuse)
He argues that pupils police each others sexual identities through name calling. E.g. gay, lezzie.
Lees (double standards)
Boys typically boast about their sexual exploits and are seen as cool but when a girl is overy sexual or dresses inappropriately, they are labelled as a slag.
Verbal abuse
Cornell argues that dominant gender and sexual identities are reinforced through a rich vocabulary of abuse.
Mac an Ghaill (the male gaze)
They argue that the male gaze is a form of surveillance - a way for boys to prove their masculinity and to tell stories of their sexual conquests, and those who dont run the risk of being labelled as gay. This reinforces hegemonic masculinity and devalues femininity.
Parker (verbal abuse)
He argued that negative labels are given out quite easily. These labels have no relation to pupils sexual behaviour but is just used to reinforce gender norms and identities.
The male gaze
This refers to the way teachers and students look girls up and down and make judgements about their appearance.
