what is labelling?
A
- attach a meaning of definition to someone
- often labelled on the basis of stereotypes

A
- found teachers judged pupils according to how closely they fitted an image of the ‘ideal pupil’

what is the self fulfilling prophecy?
A
- a prediction which comes true
- e.g. labels

what does Becker show?
A
- teachers don’t see W/C pupils as ideal and tend to have lower expectations, therefore get put in lower streams

what is a pupil subculture?
A
- a group of pupils who share similar values and behaviour patterns

what is a pro-school subculture?
A
- pupils placed in higher streams tend to remain committed to the values of the school

- found those placed in low streams suffer a loss of self esteem, the school has undermined their self worth

how does the label of failure lead to anti school subcultures?
A
- pushes them to search for alternative ways of getting status
- usually involves inverting the schools values of hard work, obedience and punctuality

how does marketisation and selection policies affect this?
A
- it explains why schools are under pressure to select more able, largely m/c pupils who will gain the school a higher ranking in league tables

A
- selecting higher ability pupils who gain the best results and costs less to teach

A
- off-loading pupils with learning difficulties, who are expensive to teach and get poor results
